Founded in 1937, HCS Family Services has grown from a small closet-sized pantry into a vital community resource that now serves more than 450+ families each week. With locations in Hinsdale and Willowbrook, the nonprofit provides fresh produce, proteins, pantry staples, and essentials like diapers and household supplies. The goal is to ensure that neighbors have consistent access to what they need to thrive.
HCS Family Services offers two service models: curbside pickup and in-person shopping, which was relaunched with help from a Community Impact grant from DuPage Foundation. “While many of our neighbors prefer the drive-up model, there are some who really look forward to in-person shopping. With our grant, we were able to set up dietary-specific shelves, including gluten-free and low-salt options,” said Wendy Michalski, CEO of HCS Family Services.
The grant also supported a new barcode system that makes intake faster and more efficient. Additionally, HCS Family Services was able to fund a farmers market in Willowbrook, where families can sample fresh foods, take home recipes, and learn healthy cooking skills.
The impact is deeply personal. One college student relied on the pantry throughout her studies, graduating with a degree in social work and later returning to thank HCS Family Services for helping her succeed. A mother, newly divorced and struggling to provide for her son, came to the pantry in tears. Instead of judgment, she found compassion, groceries, and hope.
Each week, more than 100 volunteers power this mission. From local students to longtime community members, they show up rain or shine. Together with DuPage Foundation, HCS Family Services is ensuring that no neighbor faces hunger alone.
