A Hand Up for Veterans
For many veterans, returning to civilian life brings unexpected challenges. At Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans (MSHV), the goal is clear: to provide not just housing, but comprehensive support to help veterans and their families build stable, fulfilling lives.
MSHV has grown into Illinois’ premier veteran-centric organization, serving more than 1,000 veterans and their households each year. Its seven core programs span housing, employment, and clinical services, alongside a commissary stocked with household essentials. Its mission goes beyond putting a roof over someone’s head—it carves a pathway to independence.
MSHV received an Immediate Intervention grant in August 2024 as part of DuPage Foundation and DuPage County’s DuPage Community Transformation Partnership. The grant provided direct rental assistance and security deposits for DuPage veterans at risk of homelessness.
“This grant allowed us to bridge the gap, ensuring that our veterans are supported and stable,” said Kristal Wilson, MSHV’s veteran grants manager. “It has been especially impactful for seniors, many of whom are coping with health issues and fixed incomes.”
MSHV can be the difference between uncertainty and stability, especially for veterans like Arnoldo. The 70-yearold Air Force veteran moved to DuPage County seeking stability but ended up living in his car after financial setbacks. With help from MSHV, DuPage County, and DuPage Foundation, Arnoldo secured an apartment in a senior residence. “That was the best day of my life,” he said. Today, he remains housed and thriving.
As MSHV Deputy Executive Director Rizik Mohammad explained, “We provide services to make sure that our veterans aren’t just getting a handout, but really a hand up.”
