Structuring Multi-Generational Philanthropy

October 2, 2023
An important first step in creating any multi-generational philanthropy plan is to advise clients to consider organizing their charitable giving by partnering with their local community foundation to articulate their philanthropic purpose.

The process of organizing a family’s charitable giving provides much-needed clarity around their philanthropic goals and intended impact. An organized approach to family giving will become a guidepost for future generations to model when making decisions about which causes or not-for-profit organizations they wish to support.

Establishing a fund at DuPage Foundation can be an effective solution for clients who are launching a multi-generational giving strategy. Here’s why:

  • The charitable giving vehicles we offer are extremely flexible and can be used to engage an extended family in the process of charitable giving. Donor-advised funds, for example, are popular because they allow your clients to name children and grandchildren as successor advisors.
  • Clients can easily make a large transfer of cash or marketable securities that are immediately eligible for a charitable deduction. They can then recommend grants to their favorite charities from their fund when the time is right.
  • Partnering with us to organize charitable plans makes your clients, as well as their successor advisors, part of a larger community of giving, with opportunities to collaborate with other donors who share similar interests.

A community foundation’s tools and resources make it much easier for families to communicate across generations about their charitable giving purpose and goals for long-term impact. DuPage Foundation welcomes the opportunity to work with you and any of your clients to establish an enduring and rewarding family philanthropy program that is customized to meet each client’s unique goals.
