The DuPage County arts community came together for a mid-March critical discussion on the state of the arts. Hosted by Arts DuPage, a DuPage Foundation initiative, the 2025 State of the Arts in DuPage County forum was held at the DuPage County Historical Museum. The annual event brought together local arts leaders to explore the challenges, successes, and future opportunities for the region’s creative sector.

A Panel of Experts

The discussion was moderated by Nolan W. McCants, a global fine art photographer and owner of The Nolan Gallery in downtown Aurora. McCants guided the conversation with a thoughtful and collaborative approach, encouraging open dialogue among panelists and attendees alike.

This year’s panel featured:

Key Topics of Discussion

The panel covered a range of pressing issues affecting the arts community, including:

  • Financial pressures: Rising costs and shifts in funding are challenging many organizations to find sustainable solutions.
  • Audience engagement: Trends show changing audience habits, requiring new strategies for attracting and retaining supporters.
  • Digital transformation: The role of AI and digital tools in artistic practice and arts management continues to expand.
  • Arts education: Community-based programs have an important role in the arts scene, even as interest in private instruction grows.

Throughout the conversation, panelists shared how their organizations are responding to these shifts. Creative programming, partnerships across sectors, and innovative audience outreach efforts are helping them navigate today’s evolving landscape.

Collaboration as the Way Forward

One of the strongest themes of the discussion was the importance of collaboration. Arts organizations in DuPage County are increasingly working together to strengthen the local arts scene.

“The energy and openness in the room reflected just how passionate and committed our arts leaders are,” said Deborah Venezia, director of Arts DuPage. “These conversations are vital—not just for identifying our challenges but for sparking creative, collective solutions that ensure the arts continue to thrive across DuPage County.”

The event also allowed for audience participation, with attendees sharing their perspectives and engaging directly with the panelists. This interactive dialogue reinforced the need for shared spaces where the arts community can connect, reflect, and plan for the future.

Looking Ahead

As the arts landscape continues to evolve, having communal conversations can help ensure that DuPage County remains a place where creativity, culture, and community flourish. The State of the Arts in DuPage County serves as a valuable platform for arts leaders to come together, learn from one another, and build a stronger future.
